PROJECT SUMMARY: 21st Century Borders – Borders in Globalization (BIG) is an international research project funded through a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada’s Partnership Grant with its central hub located in the Centre for Global Studies (CFGS) at the University of Victoria (UVic). Our research program is comparative (across regions), policy-relevant, and cohesive (thematically consistent). Fellows will work as part of the BIG team, be expected to conduct primary research, and prepare a report on one of our thematic areas. The BIG research team at UVic will provide supervision, with support from our advisory boards which are comprised of academics, policy-makers, and business people.
Our research program is centred around two key assumptions. First, self-determination and nationalist movements pose internal regulatory/policy challenges to states. They are, in various ways, leading to regulatory, functional, and territorial processes of fragmentation or integration. This concern captures the role of new nationalisms, Indigenous resurgences, and self-determination, as well as cross-border cultures, histories, and memorialization that displace the spatial limits of intergovernmental functions and regulations. Second, new mobile border logics—resulting from cross-border connectivity, transnational regulation and sovereignty found across trade flows and human mobility, or climate change and security regimes —affect borders and ultimately the modern state system. These logics also connect non-contiguous states and regions of the world through mobility and flow corridors linking airports and seaports, requiring global border infrastructures to be located away from territorial boundaries. Our research program assesses the visibility and invisibility of borders as well as their territoriality, and their spatial natures beyond their territoriality.
POSITION SUMMARY: The University of Victoria invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Borders Studies at the School of Public Administration and the Centre for Global Studies under the supervision of Dr. Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly. BIG Fellowships provide individuals the opportunity to be integrated into an international network of scholars. Job responsibilities focus around the coordination and management of the BIG Database and Jean Monnet Network database projects including: coordinating the research team of undergraduate and graduate level research assistants, updating the database codebooks, managing the database software, and reviewing, editing, and contributing to publications associated with the database project. Other duties may include: teaching online courses and organizing conferences, workshops, seminars, and summer schools.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Social Sciences or Humanities, with a dissertation written in English
- Familiarity with Border Studies, border literatures, and/or related disciplines
- Experience and competency using MyQSL software
- Experience editing or reviewing publications
- Comfort working with both qualitative and quantitative methodologies
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated research productivity (peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations)
- Ability to work autonomously and take a lead role on projects under the supervision of the principal investigators and project manager.
- Previous experience working on database construction is considered an asset
POSTION INFORMATION:
- The position is full time for one year. Start date is negotiable but no later than January 9th, 2023.
- We offer a three-month probationary salary of $40,000 per year. Following the successful completion of the probationary period, the salary increases to $45,000 per year.
- The successful candidate will be provided shared office space at the University of Victoria’s Centre for Global Studies.
- The position is funded by the 21st Century Borders grant as part of the Borders in Globalization research program. 21st Century Borders is funded through external grant funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Erasmus+ Programs of the European Union.
