Protein lysine ubiquitination and acetylation as important post-translational modifications in cellular physiology, infection and disease

The control of cellular processes by gene expression is well established, however regulation can be also achieved by myriads of modular post-translational modification (PTM) cascades. Typically, PTMs are enzymatically attached to specific proteinogenic amino acids to extend their chemical repertoire by modifying an existing functional group or introducing a new one. “Writers”, which catalyze PTMs, and “readers”, which recognize them, collaboratively transduce input signals into specific cellular outputs. “Erasers” counteract these processes by removing the PTMs. We concentrate here on lysine ubiquitination and acetylation as important PTM in cellular physiology, infection and disease.

The research focus of Elke Krüger is the regulation of protein homeostasis by major cellular proteases and the consequences of proteostatic dysfunction in immune responses. She studied microbiology in Greifswald and Osnabrück and finished her PhD in 1996 with work on Clp-proteases in Gram-positive bacteria. In 1999 she joined the institute of Biochemistry at the Charité in Berlin and started her own group to investigate the ubiquitin proteasome system in mammalian immune responses (W2 professor appointment in 2009). Currently, she chairs the Institute of Medical Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University Medicine Greifswald and is elected vice dean for promotion of young talents.

Michael Lammers studied biology at the University of Münster. In 2006 he finished his doctorate conducted at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology/Dortmund. Afterwards he was research scientist at Direvo Biotech AG in Cologne. 2008 to 2010 he was PostDoc at the MRC/LMB in Cambridge/UK before starting his own independent junior research group at the University of Cologne. From 2011 to 2016 he was Emmy Noether group leader at University of Cologne and DFG Heisenberg fellow from 2016-2018. In 2018 he was appointed W3 Professor for Biochemistry at University of Greifswald. Since 2020, he is Managing Director of the Institute of Biochemistry.
