Antibiotic resistant Escherichia coli are a major cause of mortality and morbidity and the main threat in hospital and community acquired infections. The emergence of septicemic, highly antibiotic resistant pandemic strains constitutes a strong warning signal that warrants the search for new ways to fight such bacteria. We use functional genomics to understand the pathogenesis of these bacteria and will discuss potential avenues for combatting these infections.
