The Faculty of Arts and Humanities awards the university degree Dr. phil. (doctor philosophiae). The basis for conducting doctoral procedures is the Promotionsordnung (Doctoral Regulations) of 20 December 2021 in the version of the second amending statutes of 26 March 2024 and the Landeshochschulgesetz (State Higher Education Act) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
1. Getting accepted as a doctoral candidate
It is recommended that doctoral students register as doctoral candidates with the Dean’s Office of Arts and Humanities as early as possible. This involves an initial verification of the formal admission requirements. Registration is also a requirement for enrolment as a doctoral candidate. With the amendment to the Doctoral Regulations of October 2016, the qualification of a supervision agreement [de] is mandatory as well.
2. Admission to the doctoral procedure
Once the doctoral thesis has been completed, a request to open the doctoral procedure must be submitted in writing to the Dean’s Office. With the request, proof of fulfilment of the admission requirements must be submitted, as well as two bound copies and an electronic version of the thesis, the data protection declaration, the affidavit and declaration of honour, a proposal for the members of the doctoral committee, and a Curriculum Vitae (CV). It is currently also possible to do a cumulative doctorate in the subjects English Studies, Baltic Studies, Educational Science, Political and Communication Science and Philosophy. In the information sheet for submitting the request to open the doctoral procedure [de], you will find a list of all documents which must be submitted to the Dean’s Office together with the thesis and the request to open the procedure, as well as information on the structure of the thesis.
3. Oral examination
After the admission to the doctoral procedure has been granted, the Faculty Council orders two assessors and the doctoral committee, of which the two assessors are also members. If the thesis is graded as passed, the chair of the doctoral committee will set a date for the public oral defence in consultation with the doctoral candidate once the period of display has finished.
4. Publication of the thesis
The requirement for the awarding of the doctoral certificate and thus for the right to use the doctoral degree is the publication of the thesis. The doctoral candidate must submit the version approved by the Dean’s Office to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities within three years after the examination date (disputation) in the mandatory number of obligatory copies. This deadline can be extended upon justified request. Greifswald’s University Library permits the submission of theses in electronic form, in accordance with the provisions of the Doctoral Regulations. You can find the necessary information here [de].
