The optional studies are the “third pillar” of the Bachelor’s degree courses in Greifswald. Their purpose is to broaden your academic education and to provide you with important key skills for your studies and later professional life. The internship, which is recognised as part of the optional studies, acquaints students with the professional field. The Optional Studies make up a total of approx. 9% of the final grade of your Bachelor’s degree course.
The area Optional Studies, including the internship, comprises a total of 30 credits (ECTS), which must be acquired from the 3rd semester onwards. These 30 ECTS are divided into several modules of 5 or 10 ECTS (20 ECTS in total) as well as one or more compulsory internships (10 ECTS), which can be carried out in Germany or abroad.
Within the framework of the Optional Studies, students can choose from 3 pillars. In the pillar Languages and Interdisciplinary Competences, students can study various languages and basics from different fields. The pillar Basic Subject Skills is a kind of third, smaller subject in which students can study the basics of another subject discipline. With the Specialisation pillar, students are able to acquire in-depth knowledge of one of the two subjects they are studying. If students do not complete the pillars Basic Subject Skills or Specialisation with 20 ECTS, students’ acquired ECTS will automatically be credited to pillar 1.
It is important to note that students cannot have modules credited twice, i.e. modules studied as part of the subject specialism of their degree course cannot be taken again in the Optional Studies. Please also note other restrictions in the foreign language departments.
