The recent translation of the anthology "Globalizing Borderlands Studies in Europe and North America" into Korean testifies to the globally recognized innovation of Greifswald's approaches in Area Studies. The derives from a cooperation between the border research in Greifswald and Santa Barbara in 2011. Greifswald’s contributions focus in particular on the emergence of multi-layered cultural and social border areas through migration, trade, and cultural exchange, and how these inform our understanding of “region”. The sea is core of this region and the interactions therein. It also influences our understanding of borders and borderlands in its vast hinterlands. Against this background, the Greifswald research results contribute to the understanding of regional settings in major maritime regions and also initiate new research on maritime regions worldwide.
