The sustainable use of the oceans was the topic of a virtual conference of the European Parliament’s SEArica (Seas, Rivers, Islands and Coastal Areas) intergroup on 28 January 2021. Under the heading "A blue dimension to the Green Deal: The way towards a sustainable recovery of the blue economy in Europe", scientists once again highlighted the dramatically threatened state of the oceans and discussed the possibilities of a more sustainable management of the marine resources with European politicians. This especially applies to the particularly fragile ecosystem of the Baltic Sea. A "blue economy" can only be sustainable if the economic view of sea-based activities goes hand in hand with strict consideration of ecological research. This credo forms the basis for the development of a Baltic Sea Literacy, as it is being advanced at the IFZO's Research cluster “Sustainability”.
