In an application-oriented, interdisciplinary context, academics, students and theatre professionals came together to study the change in opera practice caused by the shift towards rural areas. In addition to contributions on the concept of rural space, the sensual experience of today’s music theatre practice and future music theatre mediation, the workshop focused on the practical aspect and brought together students from the Universities for Music and Theatre Leipzig, Weimar and Rostock as well as musicology students from Greifswald, who gathered on the northern beach of Wittow on the isle of Rügen. There, they reflected on land-sea borders in music and the performing arts. The potential which emerged from this practical experience and the new opportunities for collaboration were then discussed and formulated.
