CfP – Jean Monnet Network on Post-Truth Politics, Nationalism and the (De-)Legitimation of European Integration

The Jean Monnet Network on Post-Truth Politics, Nationalism and the (De-)Legitimation of European Integration is organizing a conference from August 31, 2022 – September 2, 2022 at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. We invite proposals for individual papers on the subject of fake news, disinformation, and post-truth politics looking at the impact of these issues on Western Democracies and the European Union in a comparative perspective.

The organising committee seeks proposals on the following four areas of research:

  • Possible impact of post-truth politics on the public sphere and the quality of public deliberation.
  • Possible impact of post-truth politics on the legitimation and delegitimation of democracies in North America and/or the European Union and its member states, considering in particular developments connected to public perceptions of and/or support for liberal democracies.
  • Possible impact of post-truth politics on political systems and democracy in North America and/or the EU and its member states, for instance with regard to a strengthening of radical actors and a weakening of moderate actors.
  • Possible impact of post-truth politics on mediatization and politicization of immigration. This entails studying how social media and counter media outlets harness anti-immigration sentiment and comparing the local adaptations in democracies and across western democracies in this ‘re-informative’ mode of far-right and right-wing populist mobilization.

The deadline to apply is April 29th, 2022 at 5:00pm (PDT). For more information about submission requirements and eligibility details, see the full call for proposals attached.
