Report - Lecture Series “International Inspiration” 2019/2020

On January 15-16 Dr. Anna Novikov participated in the Lecture Series “International Inspiration” 2019/2020 at the Center for Contemporary Arts, Estonia and Institute of Art History and Visual Culture of Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn. She presented two evening lectures: “Nation is the New Black: Patriotic Fashion and Performance in the Post-Communist States”, and “My Body is My Runestick and My Tattoos Tell My Story”: Performing Self-Barbarization in the Digital Age”.

In addition, she had a chance to meet the CCAE team and to discuss the recent exhibition organized by Sten Ojavee for the VI Artishoki biennale with the focus of nationalism and fashion in Estonian context. Dr. Novikov was also invited to attend the History Museum of Estonia, to visit the Estonian Academy of Arts department of fashion design and to check the recent ethno-fashion works by students under the supervision of Prof. Piret Puppart. Finally, she visited the KUMU Art museum exhibition Creating the Self: Emancipating Woman in Estonian and Finnish Art, which is the largest exposition of artworks by Estonian female artists with a guidance of Anu Allas and the exhibition “The Conqueror’s Eye: Lisa Reihana’s In Pursuit of Venus” together with a historian Linda Kaljundi.
